A tree uses what comes its way to nurture itself. By sinking its roots deeply into the earth, by accepting the rain that flows towards it, by reaching out to the sun, the tree perfects its character and becomes great. ... Absorb, absorb, absorb. That is the secret of the tree.
Deng Ming-Dao Everyday Tao. 1996

Among the scenes which are deeply impressed on my mind, none exceed in sublimity the primeval forests un-defaced by the hand of man. No one can stand in these solitudes unmoved, and not feel that there is more in man than the mere breath of his body.

1. Christmas Gifts Buy a TreeTwist this Christmas and & Plant a Tree for Life
TreeTwists are woollen scarves, bracelets and clips. They are different because each one comes with a tree, planted in the Caledonian Forest by Trees for Life. Every TreeTwist therefore represents a tree.
The TreeTwists are designed and handmade in the Shetland and Orkney Islands by Tait & Style.
TreeTwists start at £10 for a TreeClip and a seedling, up to £20 for a TreeTie and a tree.

2. Easter Gifts Easter Gifts for 2009
Don''t be tempted by imported flowers! Contain your chocolate urges! This year give eco friendly Easter gifts. Plant a tree (or more!) so you can spend the remainder of the year basking in the glory of your tree, growing upwards because you didn''t grow outwards!! Easter is a time of hope, new growth and new life, trees planted at this time are particularly poignant - the Earth doesn''t need more chocolate eggs (and nor do most of us). Support Mother Earth and give her an environmentally friendly eco gift for the Caledonian Forest so that you can wear your TreeTwist with pride.

3. Father's day PLANT A TREE IN THE NAME OF YOUR FATHER and let him enjoy a TreeTwist because you did!
Father's Day was invented to honour fathers (and to even up the score in the face of Mother's Day). Father's Day is a day your father should be happy. When you go out of your way to show him you have noticed the fact that he has given up half his life to help bring you up. Consider the sleepless nights he has endured, the number of holidays and treats he has given up in the name of your nappies/wardrobe/Christmas indulgence fund. Lets face it. He wasn't old and haggard before you came along...So think what might make him happy - what might give him the impression that he is appreciated, listened to, loved. Something for Father's day that makes him feel special.
WristTwist and whole managed tree, a fathers day gift for £15

Fathers are notoriously difficult to buy gifts for and if this year you have only got as far as considering giving him a gift wrapped TV control pr a pair of socks, you might want to read on, because alternatively, and more originally, you could plant a tree in his name. Like the ones in the picture. Not the kind of present you get everyday.
This would be a Father's Day gift that will really leave his mark on our planet and make him feel noticed. Plant him a tree that will outlive any normal mortal and grow on into the future because He (as in Your Dad) Walked The Earth.

6. Graduation gifts
Once you leave the secure environs of college, or school, and find yourself standing on your own feet, what better talisman could you take with you, than a tree. And if, say, you choose a TreeClip to use as a keyring and to plant a seedling to reflect the start of your new life, it might remind you what you have achieved already.
From now on we can take nothing for granted except perhaps our own ingenuity. Let us hope that human endeavour can undo enough of the damage we have inflicted on our planet.
"You cannot help but learn more as you take the world into your hands. Take it up reverently, for it is an old piece of clay, with millions of thumbprints on it."
John Updike

7. Halloween gifts If you have to choose between tricking and treating, treat the earth this Hallowe''en
Plant a tree and treat yourself to a TreeTwist

Plant a tree for Hallowe''en
And just because we thought you might be interested, an October 2005 CNN Poll showed :
A majority of us, 48 percent, believe in ghosts.
Twenty-two percent of Americans say they’ve seen or felt a ghost.
Women are more likely to say they believe in ghosts than are men.
More than half of younger Americans aged 18 to 45 believe in ghosts.
A whopping 78 percent of us believe in life after death.
Many historic events have happened on Hallowe''en Day – among them:
834 - The first Halloween (All Hallows Eve) is celebrated
1876 - A cyclone hits Bengal, killing about 200,000
1918 - Spanish flu kills 21,00 people in the U.S. in one week
1922 - Mussolini becomes the Premier of Italy
1926 - Harry Houdini dies in Detroit
1941 - Mount Rushmore is completed
1968 - President Johnson issued a “cease all bombing” order in North Vietnam
Adults love Halloween, too. It is estimated that one-third of all adults don costumes and join-in the “spookiest- night” festivities. The 2005 season had almost 4 million of us wearing a “Witch” costume. That’s 16.4% of all adult Halloweeners. And...we like “Vampires” too – 1.4 million wore the vampire cape and fangs in 2005. Costumes for famous people and celebrities tied with monsters at about 7.5 million each. The child’s “Princess” costume was most popular in 2005, almost tripling the sales of 2004’s most popular costume, Spiderman.
One of the "most filmed" movie characters (if not the most filmed) is Dracula.
What are the "most thrilling" movies of all time? The American Film Institute polled 1,500 members of the film industry. Their Top 10 are: (1) Psycho, (2) Jaws, (3) The Exorcist, (4) North by Northwest, (5) The Silence of the Lambs, (6) Alien, (7) The Birds, (8) The French Connection, (9) Rosemary’s Baby and (10) Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Moviegoers consistently vote for Silence of the Lambs, Psycho and The Exorcist as the scariest movies of all time. There’s no clear ranking within these three - we just think they are scary.
The Salem Witch trials of 1692 are known for burning so-called witches at the stake. Actually, not one witch died by burning; most were put to death by hanging. One unfortunate witch was “pressed” to death and several died in prison of natural causes.
The first "Jack-O-Lanterns" were not pumpkins - they were hollowed-out turnips and originated in Ireland.

8. Memorial gifts Losing someone you love is never easy, and we all search for some way of giving meaning to such tragedy. Trees are an enduring symbol of life and time, and a dedicated tree, or trees, is a wonderful way to remember someone close, a living memorial that celebrates life.

Trees for Life can plant trees singly or together, perhaps two trees planted together, or a family, standing together. These trees will live for years, decades perhaps, what better way to honour a life? We hope that the TreeTwist you receive when you dedicate a tree will act as a reminder that it is growing on in the name of a loved one, and that you will find comfort in having it by you.
We have been deeply touched by the dedications that have come in to us. These trees will form part of the Caledonian Forest. They will not be cut down but will live out their lives as a lasting memorial and a legacy for future generations.
How does it work?
When a someone dedicates a tree, they can choose to receive the TreeTwist that represents it themselves, or have it sent to someone else. We hope that the TreeTwist will act as a reminder of the trees, and perhaps also remind you of the person. We will include a card explaining what the TreeTwist represents, and, if wished, we can include a certificate to accompany the TreeTwist. If several trees are to be planted, or if other people wish to join their dedications together, this can be reflected in the wording of the certificate, so that the designated family or friend is aware of how many trees have been planted as a further reminder of the contribution made to the restoration of the forest. In this case people generally prefer to each keep a TreeTwist, and often will all choose a particular design.

Every tree planted as a memorial will have a dedication read out as it is planted. TreeTwist and Trees for Life have been enormously touched by the dedications we have received. We will always do our utmost to honour every detail of every request.

9. Mother's day TreeTwist your Mother in 2009!
The plan is, every year, on Mother''s Day, you get up in the morning and spend the whole day thinking of your mother. How wonderful she is. All that she has done for you. And you tell her this. Either to her face, or you call her. Ideally you spend time with her and tell her how much she means to you. As a mother myself, I can tell you that this is definitely the plan.
Zach, a young friend of mine, was once asked at school ''What do mothers do?'' His reply delighted his mother - ''Mothers are to love you''. He was quite small at the time, and the writing was a bit dodgy, but the little piece of paper has been hanging framed in the kitchen ever since.
Below are a few samples of the TreeTwists and what you can do with them - there are more on the Order page and the Gallery.
Go on - dedicate a tree to the woman you love!!!

10. Valentine gifts TreeTwist have produced a special edition Twist to celebrate Love. We started it for Valentine''s Day, but then thought, hey, how can we tie Love down to one day? So we''re letting it run a little to celebrate Luuurve in general. Buy a LoveTwist and we will plant two trees side by side in the Caledonian Forest in North West Scotland, to spend their lives together. What could be more romantic? Imagine getting a LoveTwist from your beloved on your anniversary? On your wedding day? To remind you of the first time you met? Or just to remind you of each other? I can think of a million uses for a LoveTwist....

Instead of buying flowers that have been flown hundreds or thousands of miles only to be thrown away in a weeks time, your lover could have something beautiful he or she can wear in honour of the two trees it represents for a lifetime. A unique and beautiful scarf or WristTwist or loved up TreeClip, handmade in the Orkneys. Wrapped in scarlet tissue and with a card explaining what you have done, it is a wonderful gift with real meaning. Flowers will die in days.
